Weekend Freeway Restrictions on Valley Freeways (August 22 -
25) |
|
Several projects to add new lanes along Phoenix area
freeways will require closures or lane restrictions
this weekend (August 22-25). The Arizona Department
of Transportation (ADOT) recommends drivers use
alternate routes and allow extra travel time while
the following restrictions are in place:
Westbound I-10 narrowed between US 60 interchange
and SR 143
for completion of Broadway Curve widening project.
The freeway will be narrowed to one lane from 9 p.m.
Friday to noon Saturday
(August 23)
and will be narrowed to three lanes from noon
Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday
(August 25).
DETOUR:
Drivers are strongly encouraged to use alternate
routes and allow extra travel time.
Westbound US 60 narrowed to one lane through the
I-10 interchange from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday
(August 25) for completion of Broadway Curve
widening project. Westbound I-10 on-ramp at Baseline
Road closed. Westbound I-10 exit to northbound State
Route 143 closed.
DETOUR:
Use alternate routes and allow extra travel time.
East Valley drivers traveling to Phoenix or Sky
Harbor International Airport can use northbound Loop
101 (Price Freeway) to westbound Loop 202 (Red
Mountain Freeway). Westbound I-10 access to Sky
Harbor also available at Buckeye Road.
Project benefit:
The completion of a new westbound right lane along
I-10 between US 60 and State Route 143 will improve
traffic flow at the Broadway Curve by providing
drivers with more room to merge on and off the
freeway.
Eastbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) closed between
Tatum Boulevard and Hayden Road from 11 p.m. Friday
to 5 a.m. Monday
(August 25) for start of carpool lane construction.
DETOUR:
Drivers are strongly encouraged to use southbound
State Route 51 to Cactus Road or another freeway
alternative to avoid extreme congestion. A single
lane on Loop 101 may open Saturday between
Scottsdale and Hayden roads to help alleviate
heavily congested traffic.
Project benefit:
This project marks the final segment of Loop 101 HOV
lanes under construction. The Tatum Boulevard to
Princess Drive segment will connect 38 miles of
continuous carpool lanes when complete next year.
Southbound I-17 narrowed to one lane between Jomax
and Happy Valley roads from 9 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m.
Saturday
(August 23) for freeway widening work.
DETOUR:
Please slow down and merge safely in the work zone.
I-17 closed in both directions overnight at Carefree
Highway (State Route 74) from 10 p.m. Sunday to 5
a.m. Monday
(August 25) for interchange construction work.
DETOUR:
Traffic detoured along the interchange ramps at
Carefree Highway.
Project benefit:
ADOT is adding new lanes and interchanges along I-17
from Loop 101 to the Carefree Highway to improve
traffic flow and reduce congestion. The project is
expected to be complete in 2009.
Eastbound Loop 202
(Red Mountain Freeway)
narrowed to three lanes between Priest Drive and
Mill Avenue from 11:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday
(August 25) for bridge work. Eastbound on-ramp at
Center Parkway also closed.
DETOUR:
Drivers should use Priest Drive or other alternate
routes. |
Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) Detour
11
p.m. Friday, Aug. 22 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25
Motorists
driving on Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) will find a quicker drive
late next fall with the addition of HOV lanes to absorb
carpool, bus and motorcycle traffic between Loop 202 (Red
Mountain Freeway) and SR 51. In preparation for the
construction of this link, the Arizona Department of
Transportation (ADOT) will close Loop 101 between Tatum
Boulevard and Hayden Drive to re-stripe the traffic lanes,
improving the safety of crews and motorists by moving
traffic away from the work zone.
Closures
Eastbound Loop 101
closed from Tatum Boulevard to Hayden Road from 11 p.m.
Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.
Preferred Freeway Detour:
Drivers are strongly encouraged to use southbound State Route 51 to
Cactus Road or another freeway alternative to avoid extreme
congestion expected on eastbound Loop 101 at Tatum Boulevard
and other local streets
Local Access: For local
and business access, eastbound traffic will exit at Tatum
Boulevard and can access local streets from Mayo Boulevard
and other major streets.

Maricopa County. More than $15 billion in
comprehensive, diverse transportation improvements
are funded in the plan through a voter-approved
sales tax that became effective in January 2006.

EAST VALLEY RESIDENTS WARM UP TO ROUNDABOUTS

The newly opened section of the Red Mountain
Freeway includes two roundabouts engineered to
ease traffic flow at the McKellips and Brown
road access points.
As area residents become more familiar with
roundabout use, many have become big fans of the
way they move traffic smoothly and eliminate
delays. “The first time I drove through a
roundabout,” says east valley resident Bill
McCluskey, “I was a little cranky and anxious. I
didn’t know who had the right of way, and I
wasn’t sure what lane I should be in.
By the second or third time I drove through a
roundabout, I had figured out that I needed to
slow down and yield until I could enter into the
correct lane, and from then on, I’ve been sold
on roundabouts. I enter the Loop 202 at Brown
Road nearly every day, and I jump on the 202 to
US 60 without sitting at a light, wasting time
and gas. The roundabout video on the Web site
was extremely helpful. The engineer in me loved
the graphics in the video…I wish I had checked
it out online sooner.”

ADOT FACTORS PUBLIC OPINION INTO FREEWAY
DESIGN
The use of Modern Roundabouts in Arizona’s
Freeway construction is a result of Arizona
Department of Transportation’s (ADOT) unique
commitment to including the public in its
freeway planning process.
ADOT holds public meetings in advance of
major freeway projects, and uses the input
from those meetings to refine the master
plans. A series of public meetings were held
in the East Valley as part of the planning
process for the completion of the Loop 202
(Red Mountain Freeway).

ADOT ADDRESSES RESIDENTS’ ENVIRONMENTAL
CONCERNS
The selection of modern roundabouts for the
McKellips and Brown road interchanges was a
direct response to input from the public
meetings.
Not only are roundabouts quieter, as they
avoid the sound of trucks, busses,
motorcycles and cars braking and starting
up, they have a significant impact on
driving safety.
-
Fatal accidents are reduced by
90%
-
Efficient traffic flow increases
by 50%
-
Fuel consumption is decreased by
30 %
-
Carbon emissions are reduced by
double digits*

DRIVERS INVITED TO PRACTICE DRIVING MODERN
ROUNDABOUTS “ONLINE”
Motorists encountering roundabouts for the
first time may feel unsure about the “rules”
governing roundabouts. Taking a quick online
tutorial can be a big help. ADOT’s
informative video illustrates six possible
scenarios drivers can encounter when
navigating one of the East Valley’s new
roundabouts. ADOT’s Modern Roundabouts Video
overview is available at
this link.
The animations in the video give viewers a
sense of the flow of traffic, emphasizing
four important roundabout rules:
|
|
1. Always yield to the traffic
already in the roundabout.
2. Enter the right lane if you want
to turn right or go straight.
3. Enter the left lane to turn left.
4. If you enter in the wrong lane,
go around the roundabout and
... .. ....change
to the correct lane. |
Highway Hawk reminds all motorists:
Modern roundabouts get you to your
destination without delays, but they work
best if you
SLOW
down upon approach:
|
Slow
down to 15-25 mph when entering.
Let
vehicles already circulating go
ahead.
Obey
all one way and yield signs.
Watch
for pedestrians, bicyclists,
emergency and
large vehicles. |

SPEED IN MODERN ROUNDABOUTS SIGNIFICANTLY
REDUCE THE NUMBER OF SERIOUS ACCIDENTS

Modern Roundabout

Several engineering features of the newly
completed roundabouts promote safety. At
traditional intersections, the most common
types of crashes are right-angle, left-turn,
and head-on collisions. Due to the high
speeds of individuals trying to “beat the
green light,” these crashes comprise 75% of
serious injury accidents, and 90% of highway
fatalities.*
The vehicle to vehicle conflicts that occur
at roundabouts generally involve a vehicle
merging into the circular roadway, with both
vehicles traveling at low speeds--generally
less than 20-30 mph.

To complete project, Interstate 10 restricted
this weekend at the Broadway Curve |
|
PHOENIX - For the past few months, I-10 drivers may
have noticed work taking place along the right
shoulder of the freeway through the Broadway Curve.
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has
been widening the freeway in this area to allow
drivers a safer way to exit at Broadway Road and
State Route 143 by adding an additional lane
beginning at US 60 (Superstition Freeway).
Starting Monday morning, drivers will see the
freeway in its new configuration with the newly
completed lane and right shoulder. But in order to
complete the $3.1 million project, I-10, US 60 and
State Route 143 will need to be restricted this
weekend. Crews need to install traffic sensors in
freeway lanes, move and install overhead signs,
apply rubberized asphalt and re-stripe the new
section.
Weekend restrictions:
I-10
-
Westbound narrowed to one lane from the US 60
interchange to SR 143 from 9 p.m. Friday to noon
Saturday (Aug. 23).
-
Westbound narrowed to three lanes from the US 60
interchange to SR 143 from noon Saturday to 5
a.m. Monday (Aug. 25).
-
Westbound Broadway off-ramp closed from 9 p.m.
Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (Aug. 25).
US 60
-
Westbound narrowed to one lane from the I-10
interchange to SR 143 from 9 p.m. Friday to 5
a.m. Monday (Aug. 25). East Valley drivers
traveling to Phoenix or Sky Harbor International
Airport can detour around the restriction by
using Loop 101 (Price Freeway) to Loop 202 (Red
Mountain Freeway).
-
Northbound on-ramp closed at Baseline Road to
I-10 and US 60 from noon Saturday to 5 a.m.
Monday (Aug. 25).
SR 143
-
Northbound lanes closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 5
a.m. Monday (Aug. 25). Airport access is open at
I-10 and 24th Street in Phoenix.
This project is part of the Regional Transportation
Plan approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004.
Under the plan, a variety of transportation
improvements in the Phoenix area, including new and
expanded freeways, transit facilities and local
street upgrades, are being constructed through 2025.
