Save Animals From Euthanasia (SAFE)

At the bi-weekly meeting of Save Animals From Euthanasia (SAFE) on 5/8/06, the group met with Larry Taylor, former Vice President of the Camden County, GA., Humane Society. Larry, a resident of Gold Canyon, encouraged the group to go forward with their plans for incorporation and a non- profit status; he also agreed to serve on the Board of Directors for the group.

SAFE began in Jan. 2006 pushing for changes at the Apache Junction Animal Shelter. The core group, Joy Mulligun, Rayna Meade, Evie Mangano (of Gold Canyon) and Myrna Burdick have met with Police Chief Walp and Animal Control Staff, the City Attorney Joel Stern and have attended several City Council meetings. Progress is slow but some changes to the Shelter are in the works --additional staff, air conditioners, and improvements to the telephone system.

Once SAFE's non-profit status is granted, they, along with two other rescue groups will take adoptable animals out of the Shelter when their time is up, and foster them until a permanent home can be found for the animal.
